Kenya 2009 Project Report
The Cowdray Health Centre
Week Two
This week saw the scouts laying the hardcore and concreting on the veranda floor, and all the rooms
in the extended building. Also the delivery room in the ward / maternity block had a shower cubicle
installed along with the floor being tiled and the walls being half tiled.
The next room along in the same block, the post-natal room, also had the floor tiled along with half
tiled walls. The ladies can now deliver their babies, have a shower, and then rest in the post-natal
room. These two rooms were tiled purposely to promote hygiene.

All buildings were painted, the ward / maternity block, being pained inside and out. With the site
given a good tidy up which included re-painting and laying the pathway rocks.
We attended a school assembly this week and handed over all the pens, pencils. books, maths sets,
sports equipment that we had brought with us. The children were excited and at the next break it was
great to see them kicking a couple of balls around. Later in the day as the children were leaving we
could see a lot of new pens and pencils grasped in hands to show parents when they got home.

The Local School Scouts The UK and Kenyan Scouts
The Opening
On the last day at the soite we had an offical handing over ceremony at which we thanked everyone
for their hard work. We asked Freddie Kiuru, General Manager of the Travellers Beach Hotel in
Mombasa, who has supported all our projects since 1990, to officiate. There were also the local
community elders and the headmasters of the local schools at the ceremony with a special guest.
Joan Smith, who runs a children's home in Mombasa called 'Tumaini'.
During the presentations the school scouts who had been helping us were presented with a
Wimbledon and Wandle scarf and woggle and a Kenya 2009 badge. All the UK scouts and Navy
scouts were also awarded a Kenya 2009 badge. One of our leaders, Martin Whiting, was also
presented with his long service award for 40 years of scouting service.
Once this was all completed we were treated to a Kenyan feast cooked by us by the Kenyan scouts
and the local ladies. Then finishing off a wonderful day with a huge campfire with all the scouts
involved, singing and dancing the evening away.
The Next Project
The next project is to install a boundary fence aroung the site, as the freehold for the site has now
been obtained, possibly in 2011.
After the electricty is connecte, the Ministry of Health in Milindi have said the Dispensary will be
upgraded to a health Centre.
We would give our cincere thanks to the Kenyan Navy Commander and his tema for their support
