Kenya 2009 Project Report
The Cowdray Health Centre

Week one
This week saw UK and Kenyan Navy Scouts mixing cement and helping Kenyan Fundis
(Builders) laying blocks to enlarge the original clinic building, built by us in 1996.
All the scouts also spent many hours moving rubble and ballast to leval the floors in the
extended building. This was completed by forming a chain across the clinic site. Once it
was moved they then had to pummel it to give a firm foundation that will last for years to come.
Meanwhile, other leaders and scouts raised the water tank some one and a half metres.
This was to get the head of water now needed for the shower which was being built in the
delivery room in the ward / maternity unit.
During this first week some of the leaders were invited to visit the school. They had a tour
of the classrooms, some of which had over 100 children in them. One of these leaders,
who is a teacher in the UK, was then invited to run a lesson. This seemd to amuse all the
children involved. There was also a PE lesson later which had about 40 children involved but
an audience of about 200.
The evenings also were exciting with the first of many gatherings after supper to have a sing
along and skecthes, from Kenyan Navy scouts, school scouts, and the UK scouts. All
joined in and enjoyed the experience.
